Q: I want to be a volunteer what should I do?
A: Contact Hart Partners or the schools, we will get you connected!
Q: I work during the day, but I still want to help, are there volunteer opportunities for me?
A: Yes! We have many opportunities for volunteers to assist us outside of school. We will add your name to a pool of volunteers and will stay in touch as events come available.
Q: I showed up at my school, but no one was there...
A: The school schedule changes as field trip schedules and special events are planned. Your contact person will try to keep you updated as dates/events change.
Q: What do I do with my student?
A: Most of our volunteers work with students one on one to improve reading and math skills. Volunteers are given a Mentor Handbook which offers tips and suggestions for working with students. Periodic trainings are held by staff. We are here to assist you, feel free to contact us at any time that you need resources. We stay in contact so that you won't feel that you are on your own.
Application Process:
Step 1: Please call us for additional information on applying, or ask at the school where you want to volunteer. If convenient, you may print out our volunteer application form above and send it to us. We will contact you.
Step 2: Background checks are required. Every volunteer is screened. You will be given a background check form to complete. When the check is completed, we begin the process of training and getting you into the schools to be matched with a student.
Step 3: Training. Each volunteer is trained on procedures from where to sign in, to documenting time spent with a child. We also give you tips for working with students in different subject areas and grade levels. A staff member is available to you at all times as you work with students.
Step 4: Mentor! Experience the joy of helping a child! It may include assisting with homework, projects, and even just listening and showing that each child is important.
Mentor
Noun: "wise and trusted counselor or teacher"
Verb: "to serve as a trusted counselor or teacher to another person"
Tutor
Noun: "a private instructor, one that gives additional, special, or remedial instruction"
Verb: "To act as a tutor, to instruct or teach privately"
The emphasis of a mentor is on counselor and that of a tutor is on instruction; however, a mentor may tutor a student and a tutor may mentor a student.
A mentor's time commitment is often greater than a tutor because of the importance of building trust in the mentoring relationships.
A tutor's relationship is usually tied toward educational goals related to the school calendar.
